    Bouncer fired after disobeying ex-boss

Joe Navarrete was standing guard at Slick's bar in Norco when a barefoot woman in her early 20s came running toward him in a tattered, grass-stained sweater.

Through bloodied mouth and choppy, stuttering breaths, the woman told Navarrete that a man she had just met attacked and tried to rape her in a nearby residential area.

Navarrete sat the woman in a plastic chair outside the Hamner Avenue bar and dialed 911.

He and other security guards working that night say they took turns looking after the woman until police arrived, despite an order from the owner, Simon Fangary, to come inside and keep watch from the doorway.

"I told Joe I'm on his side," said Enrique Rosales, Slick's head bouncer who was working alongside Navarrete the night of May 9.

He added that the 911 operator told Navarrete "to stay outside with the girl, so he did. (Fangary) wanted us to go inside and leave the girl outside. We never left her alone out there, but our boss told us to."

Around 11:45 p.m., a few minutes after the distressed victim arrived, Navarrete said he was called into Fangary's office and chastised for disobeying orders and drawing negative attention to the business by calling 911. He has since been fired.

Navarrete "wants to bad-mouth the place because he was fired," Fangary said. "He was not fired for calling 911. ... There were other actions that were against our policy."

Fangary said he is legally restricted from discussing Navarrete's termination. He said the bar's policy is to not get involved "if it doesn't have to do with our business."

Bar employees might not be covered by workers' compensation if something were to happen to them outside the bar, Fangary said.

"Overall, if there's a break-in in a car or if there's someone stealing a car, this is not our business," he said. "We're here to keep the peace at our business."

Fangary said an exception would have been made if he had known how serious the situation was. He said no one told him about the assault.

James Allen Schneider, a 21-year-old Norco resident, has been charged with attempted rape, assault with a deadly weapon and robbery in connection with the incident.

According to a report from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, a man followed the woman onto Second Street, where he attacked her and threatened to rape her. She fought back and escaped, running about a half-mile to Slick's.

A K-9 unit searched the area and found Schneider hiding behind a home in the 1500 block of Second Street. He had a large scratch on his left cheek and the woman's property with him, reports show.

Navarrete, 43, has worked weekends at the bar for the past six months.

He said he regrets losing his post, but not his decision to stay outside with the woman.

"He tried to make me feel guilty about causing a scene," Navarrete said of his former employer. "I told him, 'I don't know what you're expecting from me. I'm not apologizing for anything.'"

Angel Torres, another Slick's bouncer on duty that night, said Navarrete did the right thing.

"She definitely needed someone out there to help her," Torres said of the woman who came looking for help. "She was in rough shape."

Fangary said Navarrete "wants to be a hero" by trash-talking his ex-boss.

The bar owner said if he had known about the attack, "I would've done everything in my power to help the girl, but I had no idea what was going on."

Had a vodka/rockstar and it tasted watered down. I was just here to meet friends. Had a vodka/cranberry and thought maybe I would try it with a rockstar. Nope. Still watered down and this was right after I get the drink. And it wasn't bitter like alcohol would taste but it was like that nasty taste you get when you let your drink sit. Pissed because I tipped. I would rather pound a four loko than try to get a buzz here. Pool tables are a cool feature but mehhh I'll pass. It's this or the maverick so I guess I made my choice. Gross. And it smells like ass.

I wish there was an option for no stars. Owner fired employee for doing the right thing, he called 911 for a woman who came in off the street looking for help after being attacked. Owner wanted him to leave her outside by herself. Disgusting! I will never return to this place again. Story on ABC7 May 2015

Women should not come here. They do not care if you are raped or assaulted. If any employee tries to help you they will be fired.
